2011 Gothia Cup – Girls in Action

The 2011 Gothia Cup was special. For the first time BCSA took a girls team to compete at the Gothia Cup in Sweden. The team which represented the country won the SKF Meet the World event in Lusaka which was sponsored by SKF. The Chilulu girls from Chilulu township won the tournament after beating 7 other teams from 6 different townships in Lusaka. The team won all their qualification games to earn a place on the plane to Sweden. It was an exciting time for the girls and the community especially that very few families belived that girls could achieve what boys have achieved in the past.

The girls played 4 games at the Gothia Cup, they won won 1 game, lost two and drew one game. Macleana Daka, a 14 year old girl did very well for the team after showing exceptional talent and team spirit. One of the things the Zambian team was loved for was their ability to make friends, sing and dance even after losing a game. They indeed had  the spirit of participation.

We hope the girls will take another trip to Sweden in next year’s event.
